Program overview
Get real-world experience and launch your global career.
Travel to Indonesia to explore key social issues shaping the region and collaborate with local students and organisations tackling real-world challenges. Work alongside highly regarded Indonesian host organisations addressing criminology, sustainability, social justice, governance, policy, and community development.
During the program, you will develop contextual knowledge of Indonesia’s social, political, legal and cultural landscape while engaging with organisations addressing issues such as social justice initiatives, public policy development, environmental sustainability, legal and governance frameworks, community-led development programs, and regional cooperation between Australia and Indonesia. You will gain practical experience, cross-cultural capability, and professional skills to support your future career in the social impact sector.
Government funding through the New Colombo Plan is available for eligible students, and you can earn course credit at UTS while gaining valuable international professional experience.

Program features
Language and culture week
The program begins with a one week language and culture intensive, designed to prepare you for your professional experience in Indonesia.
Learn Indonesian: Complete 30 hours of language classes at the University of Indonesia, one of Indonesia’s top universities. The program is designed for all levels, from beginners to advanced speakers, with resources to continue improving throughout your internship.
Cultural Immersion: Alongside your language lessons, immerse yourself in cultural activities and local experiences - organised giving you the chance to practice your new skills in real-life situations.
Beyond the Classroom: Following the one week intensive language training, students then undertake weekly classes through the remainder of the internship.

Internships with Industry Leaders
In weeks 2 to 6, you will complete an internship project alongside students from the University of Indonesia in diverse, multicultural teams. Spending three days a week engaging in this practical experience will provide you with opportunities to strengthen your cross-cultural capability, global perspective and professional skills.
We work with you to find a real-world project with a leading Indonesian host organisation aligned to your field of interest. Previous students have undertaken internships across areas including criminology, public policy, community development, international relations, sustainability, and social justice, among others.

Language & Cultural Immersion and Professional Development
From weeks 2 to 6 of your internship, you’ll participate in a dedicated two days each week focused on language, culture and professional learning experiences, such as organisational visits, to deepen your understanding of Indonesia’s social, cultural and professional context.
This includes two hours of Indonesian language learning, guided group reflections, and immersive cultural activities designed to build your communication skills and cultural awareness. You’ll also take part in professional visits and interactive workshops exploring key themes such as policy, government, community justice, development, and inclusion — providing valuable insight into how organisations and institutions in Indonesia address complex social challenges in practice.

- Extra activities and travel, or any other items of a personal nature
- Host-specific requirements (ie. uniform, safety equipment)
- Laundry, toiletries and amenities

Course credit
We support you to earn credit for your course
Many universities require students to gain practical experience and offer courses that allow you to earn academic credit by completing an internship. This program has been designed to meet university and industry requirements.
UTS Unit Code: 97901 - International Internship
This internship is suitable for UTS students studying: Criminology, International Relations, International Studies and Language, Communication, Journalism and Social Sciences.
Both domestic and international student are eligible to apply, although you must be an Australian citizen to be eligible for NCP funding.

Grants & funding
$6,000 NCP grants are available for this program
New Colombo Plan (NCP)
You are likely to be eligible for an NCP grant if:
- You are an Australian citizen
- You are an undergraduate student at UTS
- This experience will count toward your uni degree
- You have received no more than one NCP grant previously (no more than two in total)
These $6,000 grants make this program more accessible and affordable. Even better, because they are grants, not loans, there is nothing to repay.

Note that you will be advised whether or not you have been allocated a grant before you need to accept your spot on the program.
Grants are limited and are distributed on a first-come-first-served basis, so apply early for your best chance of receiving one!
OS-HELP repayable loan
OS-HELP is a loan available to eligible students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place who plan to undertake some of their study overseas. If your experience with us will count towards the requirements for your Commonwealth supported course in Australia, you may be able to borrow up to $10,130. Learn more about OS-HELP here.
