Six-month Industry Placement

  • Students enrolled in the 5-year Integrated Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) / Master of Engineering program can spend their six-month placement in Indonesia, completing one of our listed industry projects with an Indonesian host organisation. To apply for these placements, students must follow the UQ application process that will be communicated to eligible students.
  • Earn credit through the subject 'Engineering Placement B (ENGG7292)'
  • Limited $14,000 NCP grants and OS-HELP Loans up to $9,893 are available to eligible students.

 

Engineering Professional Practice

  • Spend 8-12 weeks in Indonesia, completing a tailored internship in your field of Engineering with one of our network of hosts

Tailored Internship

Your internship is the core of your experience in Indonesia, so we work hard to ensure that you are in a role that you will find interesting and challenging, and one that will give you the experience you need to kick-start your career.

 

For the Six-Month Industry Placement, we have arranged pre-defined roles with Indonesian host organisations, so you can see exactly what you will be doing, and whether it is the right fit for you. 

 

For the Engineering Professional Practice we work with you and our wide network of host organisations in Indonesia to secure an internship tailored to meet your studies, interests and career ambitions. Past interns have worked on impactful, real-world projects — from developing renewable energy solutions and advancing urban transportation systems to innovating in pharmaceutical manufacturing and tackling environmental challenges.

 

Throughout your internship, the International Internships team provides ongoing support, including regular check-ins to help you excel in a dynamic, global work environment.

Focused on Your Professional Development

As part of your engineering internship, you'll have the opportunity to visit industry organisations and associations such as AECOM Indonesia, the Australian Embassy and the Indonesia-Australia Business Council. These visits offer a behind-the-scenes look at leading companies and innovative projects across Indonesia, giving you a deeper understanding of how engineering principles are applied in real-world settings. It’s also a chance to network with industry professionals and fellow international students, gain insights into global engineering practices that will position you for a global career based either within Australia or abroad.

Indonesian Language Week and Extra Classes

Throughout the program, you will complete approximately 32 hours of Indonesian language classes. The classes are delivered by the University of Indonesia (UI) - one of Indonesia's top universities. The program is designed for all levels, from beginners to advanced speakers and will give you a real foundation to build upon.

 

Your first week in Indonesia is devoted entirely to learning Indonesian language and culture. During that week you will complete approximately 20  hours of language classes at UI's campus, which is in a place called Depok, about an hour out of Jakarta and near the picturesque mountains and historic city of Bogor.

 

Alongside your language lessons, you will enjoy cultural activities and local experiences — giving you the chance to practice your new skills in real-life situations. You'll also have plenty of free time to explore the vibrant markets, street food scene, and breathtaking landscapes. This week provides a great way to build friendships, boost your confidence, and settle in before moving to Jakarta for your internship experience.

 

You will then continue to build upon this foundation with a further 12 hours of language classes during your internship.

Project Motivation

PT. Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia is committed to sustainable and reducing environmental impacts. To align with Paris Agreement and requirements, the company is preparing to develop and identify related climate transition plan and implementing climate risk management framework. Including but not limited such as GHG inventory and Carbon Footprint.

 

Project Aim

The aim of this project is to support Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia in developing a comprehensive climate transition strategy by assessing and managing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate-related risks. The student is expected to research, analyze, and provide recommendations on the most effective methodologies for the project.

 

Project Scope and Methodology

This project supports PT. Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia in developing a GHG Inventory and Climate Transition Plan to align with the Paris Agreement. It focuses on quantifying Scope 1 and 2 emissions (ISO 14064-1), identifying climate risks, and implementing a risk management framework. A Physical Transition Management System will also be developed to assess and mitigate climate-related risks.

 

Since this is a new project, students are expected to research, analyze, and provide recommendations on the most effective methodologies.

 

Required Deliverables

  • GHG Inventory and Emissions Analysis – A detailed quantification and assessment of Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, aligned with ISO 14064-1 standards.
  • Climate Transition Plan and Sustainability Gap Analysis – A comprehensive report outlining a climate transition strategy, identifying gaps in sustainability implementation, and providing recommendations for energy efficiency, carbon footprint reduction, and biogas integration.
  • Final Presentation – A structured presentation summarizing key findings, sustainability initiatives, and proposed strategies. This will equip Etana’s leadership with insights to enhance their climate resilience, optimize their biogas utilization, and drive long-term sustainability.

Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) is one of Indonesia’s leading technical universities, with a strong reputation in engineering and innovation. We support you to earn credit for your course

International Internships will support you to earn course credit at UQ. Recommended courses and contacts are listed below.

Eligibility:

This is only open to students enrolled in the 5-year Integrated Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) / Master of Engineering program.

Grants & Funding

NCP grants of up to $14,000 are available for these internships

 

New Colombo Plan (NCP)

You are likely to be eligible for an NCP grant if:

  • You are an Australian citizen
  • You are an undergraduate student
  • This experience will count toward your uni degree
  • You have received no more than one NCP grant previously (no more than two in total)

 

These grants cover most of the program fee and in some cases you receive extra to go towards other expenses.  And the best part is that because they are grants, not loans, you don't need to pay them back!

 

Connect with the UQ International Office to confirm your eligibility or discuss it with our team during your initial consultation and we will point you in the right direction. Note that you will be advised whether or not you have been allocated a grant before you need to accept your spot on the program.

 

A limited number of grants are available, so apply early for your best chance of receiving one.

 

OS-HELP repayable loan

OS-HELP is a loan available to eligible students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place who plan to undertake some of their study overseas. If your experience with us will count towards the requirements for your Commonwealth supported course in Australia, you may be able to borrow up to $9,893. You may also be eligible to borrow an extra $1,314 if you study Indonesian language in preparation for your internship. Learn more about OS-HELP here.
