Program overview

Take your criminology studies global

Explore how crime, justice and social change are understood in a different cultural and legal context while gaining international experience that will strengthen your criminology career.

This program gives La Trobe University criminology students the opportunity to combine language learning, cultural immersion and a professional internship in Indonesia. You will engage directly with organisations working across areas such as crime prevention, youth justice, victim support and human rights, gaining insight into how communities and institutions respond to crime in the Indo-Pacific region.

Students begin with a short period of language and cultural immersion in Yogyakarta at Universitas Gadjah Mada, before completing community-based internships in Jakarta hosted by University of Indonesia. Along the way, you will connect with Indonesian students, academics and professionals working in justice-related fields.

Through this experience, you will develop global criminology perspectives, cross-cultural capability and practical professional experience that will help prepare you for careers across justice, policy, community services and international development.

Government funding through the New Colombo Plan is available for eligible students, and you can earn course credit at La Trobe while gaining valuable professional international experience.

Internships with Industry Leaders

In weeks 2 to 6, you will complete an internship project alongside students from the University of Indonesia in diverse, multicultural teams. Spending four days a week engaging in this practical experience will provide you with opportunities to strengthen your cross-cultural capability, global perspective and professional skills.

We work with you to find a real-world project with a leading Indonesian host organisation aligned to your field of interest. Previous students have undertaken internships with hosts such as The National Narcotics Agency, The Institute of Criminology, Corruption Watch Indonesia and the Human Rights Working Group.
