Overview

International Internships has been organising and delivering Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experiences for students in Indonesia for over 18 years.

Founded and managed by academics, we work with our Australian universities to ensure that all of our programs deliver the required learning outcomes, providing students with real-world experience and transferable skills.

Our programs are delivered directly by our team at International Internships, not through external partners, which helps ensure they always meet our high standards. With professional staff across both Australia and Indonesia, we maintain strong connections across the Indonesian government, industry and university sectors. We have developed custom programs throughout the Indonesian archipelago and have experience in almost all disciplines.

We take pride in our long-standing partnerships with universities and our enduring, warm relationships with our Australian and Indonesian student alumni network.

Off-the-shelf programs

We have a range of ‘off-the-shelf’ programs. These are available to students from different universities and are offered by most of our Australian university partners.

Custom Programs

Our custom programs truly are that - completely customisable!

Our past custom programs have ranged from one-week intensives to year-long internships. They have been run in-country, online or a hybrid of the two. University academics often join but we also run programs without an academic and can help facilitate student assessments. And we have a wide range of experience across almost all disciplines.

We pride ourselves on our flexibility and are always willing to adapt our standard processes to meet the needs of our partners. However, our typical process for developing a custom program is:

Services

We take a truly collaborative approach to program development. Through meetings with faculty, international office and other relevant institutional staff, we develop an understanding of the student cohort and the required program outcomes (most programs are built around a WIL unit). We will offer suggestions but welcome feedback and continued discussion until we get things right.

We strive to ensure that our externally-run programs integrate with our partners’ processes providing students with a seamless experience. We offer comprehensive support for program promotion and the application process while remaining flexible and guided by our partners’ needs.

We are always 100% transparent and frank about our pricing, inclusions, what we can and cannot provide and the timing for developing a new program. This starts with the preparation of a detailed proposal, but we maintain this through clear communication prior to, during and after the program.

Our comprehensive risk management procedures have been tried, tested and refined through many years of operation. They are tailored to meet the format requested by DFAT and encompass DFAT’s PSEAH Policy and Child Protection Policy. We also prepare relevant documents for each program, including a tailored risk matrix. Our documentation is available upon request.

Our team can prepare a draft funding application and obtain relevant letters of support from local university partners and organisations from the private and public sectors. We have an excellent track record of success over many years, with the New Colombo Plan in particular. We can also support an application to vary any unused funding.

We believe that an in-country program can pave the way for deeper collaborations in the region and we can support the development or strengthening of our partners’ connections with universities or industry in Indonesia.

We have strong working relationships with major universities in Indonesia and usually collaborate with one partner in the delivery of a program. This can strengthen the relationship between Australian universities and their Indonesian partners by facilitating collaborations at the student and staff levels.

Over our 18 years in operation, we have built deep and enduring relationships with a diverse range of organisations, which is central to the quality of our programs. Our partners include multi-national organisations, Australian and Indonesian government departments, international and local NGOs, business chambers, start-ups and venture capitals.

Once dates and details have been confirmed, we can support with promotion as required by the university. This can include: program webpage; program video; campus visits; information session; flyers; social media posts; and more.

Prior to departure, students (and academics) join our Participant Portal, through which we provide a wealth of information and support them with visas, flights and everything else. We also host online consultations, a pre-departure session and are always quick to respond to any queries.

Our team in Indonesia (11 at the time of writing) have experience working both in Indonesia and abroad, enabling us to really support students’ learning experience while in Indonesia. We provide 24/7 support on all our programs and for most custom programs stay with the group for the entirety of the program. We care about what we do and go above and beyond to make sure that everyone feels safe, comfortable and fulfilled.

Program inclusions

While our programs are genuinely flexible according to our partners’ requirements, there are several elements that are commonly included.

Program inclusions 1

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Expereience

Almost all programs include a WIL experience - be it an individual internship or a real-world project for a host. Each WIL experience is tailored to the group or individual student.
Program inclusions 2

Organisational Visits

Students on all our programs will have the opportunity to visit organisations of interest. For some programs this comprises a large portion of the program, while for internship-based programs we will squeeze these in around their other commitments.
Program inclusions 3

Orientation

We provide a thorough orientation. This is typically over multiple days and encompasses everything the students need to live and move around safely, as well as cultural immersion and tips of working effectively in Indonesia.
Program inclusions 4

Language Classes

We typically include at least one introductory language class as part of the orientation, which can easily be extended as required.
Program inclusions 5

Indonesian Students

We work closely with several Indonesian universities and run our own ‘Probuddy’ program for Indonesian students. These students take part in all our programs, ensuring that Australians benefit from a local perspective and have the opportunity to make lasting friendships.
Program inclusions 6

Intercultural Communication Workshop

Our team are experts at intercultural communication and we typically include a workshop for both Australian and Indonesian students.
Program inclusions 7

Cultural Events

Ensuring that students are immersed in Indonesian culture is a priority for all programs and as such we typically include some visits to sites of cultural significance. These are attended by the local student partners which really adds to the experience.
Program inclusions 8

Weekend Trips and Social Outings

To help students experience as much of Indonesia’s diversity as possible, we take them and the Indonesian students away on weekend trip(s) and facilitate a range of fun activities during evenings and free days.
Program inclusions 9

Accommodation

We provide orientation which is typically twin share in a hotel for short-term programs and in a private room in an Indonesian ‘kost’ (like a fancy homestay) or apartment for longer programs.
Program inclusions 10

Airport Transfers

Flights are usually excluded from our programs, but we are always there to welcome students at the airport when they arrive and will also provide an airport transfer for when they leave.
