You do not need to speak Indonesian to take part in this program. Bahasa Indonesia is widely considered one of the easiest Asian languages for English speakers to begin learning because it uses the same alphabet as English and has simple pronunciation. This means many students are able to start using basic phrases and everyday expressions very quickly.

Language learning in the program is designed for all levels, including complete beginners. Classes focus on practical communication, helping you learn useful words and phrases that you can use in daily life, at university, and during your internship.

At the beginning of the program, you will complete a language assessment so that your starting level can be identified and your progress can be tracked. This helps you understand your current abilities and gives you a clear sense of how your language skills develop during the program. You will also receive formal recognition of your language learning, which can support further Indonesian language study or future professional opportunities.

One of the best ways to learn a language is by being surrounded by it. While studying and living in Indonesia, you will have many opportunities to practise Indonesian with local students, classmates, and colleagues. Even learning a small amount of the language can make a big difference in helping you connect with people, understand the culture, and feel more confident navigating life in Indonesia.

Many students find that learning Indonesian becomes one of the most enjoyable parts of their experience, opening the door to new friendships, cultural insights, and a deeper connection with the country.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is one of Indonesia’s leading public universities and is widely recognised for its academic excellence, research, and contribution to national development. Located in the cultural heart of Yogyakarta, UGM has played a significant role in educating generations of leaders across government, business, academia, and civil society.

Founded in 1949, UGM is home to more than 50,000 students studying across a broad range of disciplines, including business, economics, engineering, social sciences, health, and tourism. The university is renowned for its strong international partnerships and its commitment to connecting academic learning with the social, cultural, and economic development of Indonesia.

As part of the program, you’ll undertake approximately language classes at UGM where you’ll build the communication skills and cultural understanding needed to confidently engage with local communities before beginning your internship.

UGM’s expansive campus and vibrant student community provide an ideal environment to immerse yourself in Indonesian university life while exploring the rich history, culture, and heritage of Yogyakarta.

You can learn more about the university by visiting the official website: https://www.ugm.ac.id

Yogyakarta, commonly known as Jogja, is the cultural, university and food capital of Indonesia (although some of the many other regions of Indonesia might disagree). People come from all over the country, and the world, to trek up the windy peaks of one of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mt. Merapi, which towers over the city. Jogja is both relaxed and bustling; both historical and in the grips of a period of major development. Yogyakarta is the only region of Indonesia to retain a Sultan – a revered figure who is followed almost religiously by his subjects. The region served as the Indonesian capital for a time while the Indonesians were fighting for independence from the Dutch and still retains some autonomy from the national government as recognition of its service during the colonial period.

Yogyakarta is a hub of NGOs, community groups, artists’ collectives, traditional crafts and amazing coffee. It’s part-hippy, part-hipster, part growing economic hub and is generally just a great place to be!

A key strength of this program is the network of high-quality host organisations that support student internships in Indonesia. These organisations include businesses, tourism operators, social enterprises, non-profits, and industry groups working across areas such as tourism, hospitality, sustainability, community development, and business innovation.

Rather than placing students into generic roles, we work closely with our host organisations to create meaningful internship experiences that align with your interests, skills, and career goals. Many of our partners are highly respected in their fields and are passionate about mentoring international students and sharing insights into Indonesia’s professional and cultural environment.

Before the program begins, you will work with the program team to discuss your academic background, professional interests, and the type of experience you hope to gain. Based on this information, we match you with a host organisation that can provide a supportive and engaging workplace environment.

Throughout your internship, you will be supported by both your host organisation and the program team to ensure your placement is a valuable learning experience. This approach helps you gain practical skills, build professional confidence, and develop connections with professionals working across Indonesia’s dynamic industries.

As Indonesia’s economic, political, and commercial centre, Jakarta is the ideal location for an internationally focused internship. Home to the headquarters of leading Indonesian and multinational companies, government agencies, international organisations, and industry associations, the city offers unparalleled exposure to one of Asia’s most dynamic economies.

Throughout the program, you’ll have opportunities to attend professional briefings, industry events, networking functions, and cultural activities, allowing you to build valuable connections beyond your internship.

Outside of work, Jakarta offers the excitement of a global city, with a thriving food scene, world-class shopping, live music, sport, and vibrant neighbourhoods to explore. While fast-paced and constantly evolving, it’s an exciting place to experience modern Indonesia and gain first-hand insight into doing business in Southeast Asia.

Create lasting connections to people and place

Throughout the program, you'll have opportunities to expand your professional network through organised industry engagement, cultural experiences, and everyday interactions with Indonesian students.

Professional visits include government agencies, industry associations, innovative businesses, and the Australian Embassy, providing valuable insight into Indonesia's business and policy landscape.

You'll also participate in intercultural workshops and peer mentoring with Indonesian students, helping you build lasting friendships while developing the cross-cultural skills essential for working in international environments.

Beyond the formal program, there will be plenty of opportunities to explore Indonesia through spontaneous social activities with your local and Australian peers, as well as a planned weekend excursions to experience more of the country's rich culture, history, and natural beauty.
