Skills and Networks

Develop practical and transferable skills while building professional connections that support your future

A key strength of this program is the network of high-quality host organisations that support student internships in Indonesia. These organisations include businesses, tourism operators, social enterprises, non-profits, and industry groups working across areas such as tourism, hospitality, sustainability, community development, and business innovation.

Rather than placing students into generic roles, we work closely with our host organisations to create meaningful internship experiences that align with your interests, skills, and career goals. Many of our partners are highly respected in their fields and are passionate about mentoring international students and sharing insights into Indonesia’s professional and cultural environment.

Before the program begins, you will work with the program team to discuss your academic background, professional interests, and the type of experience you hope to gain. Based on this information, we match you with a host organisation that can provide a supportive and engaging workplace environment.

Throughout your internship, you will be supported by both your host organisation and the program team to ensure your placement is a valuable learning experience. This approach helps you gain practical skills, build professional confidence, and develop connections with professionals working across Indonesia’s dynamic industries.

Language and cultural immersion

An important part of your experience in Indonesia is developing the language skills and cultural understanding that allow you to fully engage with your surroundings. The program begins with an introduction to Indonesian language and culture, helping you build confidence communicating in everyday situations and navigating life in Yogyakarta.

Throughout the semester, you will deepen your understanding of Indonesian culture through workshops, community engagement, site visits, and experiential learning activities. Ongoing language classes help you continue developing your Indonesian communication skills, allowing you to connect more meaningfully with local students, professionals, and the wider community.

Daily Development

Continue developing your Indonesian language skills with classes throughout the semester, building confidence in everyday and workplace communication.

You do not need to speak Indonesian to take part in this program. Bahasa Indonesia is widely considered one of the easiest Asian languages for English speakers to begin learning because it uses the same alphabet as English and has simple pronunciation. This means many students are able to start using basic phrases and everyday expressions very quickly.

Language learning in the program is designed for all levels, including complete beginners. Classes focus on practical communication, helping you learn useful words and phrases that you can use in daily life, at university, and during your internship.

At the beginning of the program, you will complete a language assessment so that your starting level can be identified and your progress can be tracked. This helps you understand your current abilities and gives you a clear sense of how your language skills develop during the program. You will also receive formal recognition of your language learning, which can support further Indonesian language study or future professional opportunities.

One of the best ways to learn a language is by being surrounded by it. While studying and living in Indonesia, you will have many opportunities to practise Indonesian with local students, classmates, and colleagues. Even learning a small amount of the language can make a big difference in helping you connect with people, understand the culture, and feel more confident navigating life in Indonesia.

Many students find that learning Indonesian becomes one of the most enjoyable parts of their experience, opening the door to new friendships, cultural insights, and a deeper connection with the country.
