Program features
Industry projects
Working in a small team of Australian and Indonesian students, you will produce an entrepreneurial solution to a challenge presented to you by a real-world host organisation. You will receive guidance from your host during the program, and will present your findings back to them at the end of the program.
Your areas of interest and career ambitions will be taken into account during the project allocation process to help ensure that you get the most out of the experience. As an example of a project, a past group worked with Rantai Tekstil Lestari (RTL), an Indonesian association of private sectors, fashion designers, academics and NGOs committed to promoting sustainability through Indonesia’s textile and fashion industry. The students were tasked with researching textile waste in Indonesia and how companies can become more sustainable. For more about this experience, please read the article published by RMIT.
Organisational visits
You will attend industry-hosted seminars and workshops that will give you access to experts to gather information for your project. Some likely visits may include:
- Australian and Indonesian government (e.g. AusTrade, Vic Gov Trade and Investment, Jakarta Smart City) and business councils (Indonesia Australia Business Council), to give an understanding of the Australia-Indonesia bilateral relationship and business environment;
- Designers (e.g. JENAHARA, Kami Idea, Hijack Sandals) working between Indonesia and Australia, who will provide unique insights into the differences and similarities between the markets and the opportunities for the future;
- Manufacturers and logistics businesses (e.g. Trisco, Sipatamoda) on the challenges of doing business between Australia and Indonesia
- Retailers (e.g. Delami Brands, Uniqlo) on the challenges and opportunities of various markets;
- Entrepreneurship specialists, including venture capitalists (e.g. GDP Venture) and successful startups (e.g. MYCL).
Cultural immersion & networking
This program is designed to equip you with essential transferable skills for thriving in multicultural environments, while expanding your professional and social networks in preparation for an international career.
Cultural activities include around 12 hours of basic Indonesian language lessons, an introduction to Indonesia’s contemporary culture, history, and religion, and a fun city discovery experience in Jakarta and Bandung. Where possible, you'll also have the opportunity to attend professional networking events with relevant industry bodies.
Throughout the program, you'll work closely with Indonesian students, fostering genuine and lasting friendships along the way!
