Services Provided in Indonesia
Sourcing of an Internship Site
You can choose to either apply for one of our Featured
Positions or just apply and have us work use our
network of contacts to find something that matches what you are seeking – whether that be social work, banking, architecture, engineering, or
any other field! Either way, we will work closely with you through each step of the process.
Accommodation
Your accommodation will be provided in a kost, which is a common form of accommodation in Indonesia, somewhere between an apartment and a homestay. It basically consists of several rooms (usually between 5 and 30) in a compound, and there is generally a shared living area and a canteen. These are very popular for young professionals and students in Indonesia, and so provide a great opportunity to make friends with locals.
You will each have a private room with an ensuite. They are also located in a reputable area within Yogyakarta and are only a short walk to one of the most popular streets, which has a great selection of restaurants.
Airport Pickup and Drop-Off
Upon arrival, you will be met at the airport by the In Country International Internships staff and you will be dropped off again when it is time to leave.
Orientation Weekend and Welcome Pack
During your first weekend in the country of your internship, you will undertake an orientation program. This will include the distribution of a welcome pack, consisting of some necessities for your time in Jogja, such as a local SIM card, a map and a list of important numbers.
During the orientation weekend the In Country Manager will also run through some important information about security, health, what to do in the event of an emergency, important phone numbers, cultural aspects, places to eat, extracurricular activities, transportation, expectations at your worksite, social norms, work clothes, communicating with back home, etc.
There will also be a welcome dinner at some point during the Orientation Weekend, where you will have an opportunity to meet the International Internships team as well as representatives of the organisations where you and the others on your program will be doing your internships.
Support Before You Go
The International Internships team will be in regular contact with you in the lead up to your trip. As well as actually working with you to secure the internship, this will include helping you to get your visa, providing advice on getting there and living there (including a booklet with lots of useful information) and answering any other questions you may have.
For Indonesia you will require a Sosial Budaya visa, which will be sponsored by Universitas Islam Indonesia, our partner organisation in Yogyakarta. This allows you to stay for an initial period of two months, which the International Internships team can then help you to extend to up to six months without leaving Indonesia. Please note that you will be required to pay the fee to the Indonesian Consulate, which was $60 at last notice.
Farewell Weekend
At the conclusion of the program there will be a dinner for all participants, the International Internships team and representatives of the host organizations.
Weekend Trips
On four of the weekends during the program (two if you only go for four weeks), you will have the option to go on a trip with the other participants and the International Internships team to sites of interest in the region. Most of the expenses for these weekend activities will be covered by International Internships.
We maintain some flexibility with regard to the timing and destination of the trips to accommodate the preferences of the group and allow for the weather and other unpredictable elements in each of the countries. However, you can expect to do something on four of the weekends during your program and some typical destinations that you will likely visit include:
- Borobudur Temple
- Prambanan Temple
- Keraton (Sultan’s Palace) and Water Gardens
- Solo (Neighbouring city)
- Krakal Beach
- Soccer match
Support During the Program
The International Internships team will be contactable 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for the duration of your internship program. They will be available to help in an emergency or to just provide advice on simple matters.
The team will also be there to help make sure that everything runs smoothly at your internship site. You will meet with the program manager quite early on in your internship to discuss your position and make sure that there are no problems and you are also welcome to advise the team of any concerns at any point during your internship. In the event that an issue does arise then the In Country Manager will work with you to find the best way of solving the problem.
Opportunities to Meet with Local Students
To help you learn as much as you can and to ensure that you meet lots of interesting people, we have developed a relationship with Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), a very large and reputable university in Yogyakarta.
Early on in the program you will have the opportunity to be linked with a buddy from UII, who will help you to gain a deeper understanding of the local culture and the issues affecting students in the region.
You will also have the option to attend some forums with students from UII, where you will form a group to discuss issues of interest. This could be on anything, such as how each country is perceived by the other, the environment, gender equality, drugs, politics, etc. These will be aimed at both deepening your understanding of the local culture and helping the students from UII to understand Australian culture.

Language Course (Not Included in Program Fee)
Indonesian is one of the easiest languages to learn! Given that you will be spending a significant amount of time in Indonesia, we strongly recommend that you undertake a language course, either prior to commencing your internship or during your internship. This will help you get the most out of your internship because you will be able to communicate with any staff that don't speak English (of which all organisations have some). On top of this, by learning some words early that you will be able to practise while at work, you will likely leave with enough language skills to be very valuable to you in the future!
