Services Provided in India
Sourcing of an Internship Site
You can choose to either apply for one of our Featured Positions or just apply and have us use our network of contacts to find something that matches what you are seeking – whether that be social work, banking, architecture, engineering, or any other field! Either way, we will work closely with you through each step of the process.
Accommodation
Your accommodation will be included for the duration of your program, and will generally be in the form of a guest stay, where you will have your own room in an Indian house. The International Internships team will try and find accommodation as close as possible to your worksite and other interns there at the time so that you can minimise the time spent traveling.
Airport Pickup and Drop-Off
Upon arrival, you will be met at the airport by a member of the In Country International Internships staff (yes, there will be a sign with your name on it!!). You will be dropped off again when it is time to leave.
Orientation Weekend and Welcome Pack
During your first weekend in India, you will undertake an orientation program. This will include the distribution of a welcome pack, consisting of some necessities for your time there, including:
- A mobile phone to use while you are there (this saves the trouble of getting yours unlocked for use outside of Australia)
- a local SIM card with some credit
- a booklet with lots of useful information.
During the orientation weekend the International Internships team will also try squeeze in:
- A tour of Mumbai, including the Dharavi slum and particularly focusing on the area in which you live
- Some important information about security, health, what to do in the event of an emergency, important phone numbers, etc.
- Meeting any other interns there at the time as well as anyone else that the International Internships team thinks that you might like to meet
- Providing an itinerary for your time there and some of the expectations of you at your residence and your worksite
- A demonstration of the various transportation methods in India – quite an adventure!
- Providing lots of other information and a chance for you to ask any questions!
- A social
Support Before You Go
The International Internships team will be in regular contact with you in the lead up to your trip. As well as actually working with you to secure the internship, this will include helping you to get your visa, providing advice on getting there and living there (including a booklet with lots of useful information) and answering any other questions you may have.
Farewell Weekend
At the conclusion of your internship program you will have the opportunity to say goodbye to everyone during a lunch or dinner. The International Internships team, other participants and members of your internship site will all be invited, so everyone will have a chance to bid you a proper farewell.
Debriefing Sessions and Social Gatherings
All the colour of flair of India makes it an exciting place to be, but it can also become a little overwhelming at times. The debriefing sessions and social gatherings give you an opportunity to meet with International Internships team members and other interns for a relatively informal discussion of your week to learn from each other and get any frustrations off your chest. These will be mixed between:
- Cross-cultural events, where you will discuss a specific cultural topic.
- Social events, which are less formal, and will generally occur over a drink at a bar or cafe.
Networking Events
Networking events provide a great opportunity for you to gain a better understanding of how things really work in the country of your internship and can even lead to you securing your perfect job.
The International Internships team will provide opportunities for you to meet as many people as possible. The format of this will vary, depending on what is on while you are there, but examples include: local ex-pat social evenings, business group workshops, film screenings, arts and culture events, etc.
Weekend Trips
You will have the option to go on trips with the other participants and the International Internships team to sites of interest in the region. Most of the expenses for these weekend activities will be covered by International Internships.
These will generally be held over one weekend in every four so as to ensure that you still have a number of weekends to yourself for catching up with friends, exploring and resting. Some typical destinations that you will likely visit include:
- Rural India Tour
- Train trip to local Hill station
- Guided tour to local historical sites.
- Guided Gastronomical city tour.
Support During the Program
The International Internships team will be contactable 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for the duration of your internship program. They will be available to help in an emergency or to just provide advice on simple matters.
The team will also be there to help make sure that everything runs smoothly at your internship site. Somebody will take you to your worksite on your first day and introduce you to your employers and will then be available for the duration of your internship to help in the event that any issues arise.
Once every four weeks you will also meet individually with someone from the International Internships team to discuss how things are going in a more formal manner. This ensures that you have a comfortable setting to raise any worries you may have – if you have none, then it just serves as a nice free lunch!
