India

The clichés that we typically associate with India are true of most Indians – they love cricket, eat spicy foods and the majority of people are Hindu. However, the thing that stands out most about India is that it is alive. There are things happening everywhere you look in India and every night when you go to bed you know that you’ve earned your sleep!
The other thing that we typically associate with India over recent times is its tremendous rate of economic growth. The buildings going up every day, the roads and rail to carry everyone, the growth of technology, food and clothing needed to fulfil needs of an ever increasing middle class are all testament to this and all provide amazing potential for people looking to work in India or work with Indians. Added to this is the Free Trade Agreement between Australia and India that is currently being developed.
Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, and Pune (about two hours from Mumbai) are the cities in India where all of the internships are hosted. Situated on the west coast, Mumbai is the capital of the state of Maharashtra and is the financial hub of India. With a deep natural harbour, Mumbai receives a large percentage of India’s trade, making it a centre for anyone exporting to India or importing from India. Pune is another rapidly developing city and is a great hub for IT and industry.
Mumbai is also famous for its film production, a massive industry in India, commonly known as Bollywood (derived from Mumbai’s old name, Bombay). The downside to all the growth in India is the ever increasing disparity of wealth and there is a huge amount of poverty. As well as presenting internship opportunities in industries such as banking, trade, construction and engineering, Mumbai is also a great place for people interested in film or social/environmental work.
