Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate on the International Internships programs?

Anybody that is 18 years of age or over is welcome to apply to participate on an Indonesian Internship program.

Is there any way of getting help with the funding of my internship?

If you are a university student, then it may be possible for you to obtain a grant to help toward the expenses of your internship.  We have included the details of such grants that we know about in the university specific information under "Obtaining a Credit Point for University Students".  However, we have not yet had a chance to look into this at many universities so if there is nothing about a grant at your university then it is still worth while looking into it yourself.

What will I get out of going on a program?

Some of the benefits that you are likely to receive by coming on an International Internships program include:
  • Making a host of international contacts in your field of interest
  • Meeting Australians with a shared interest in the country of your internship
  • Improving your language skills if you choose to work in China or Indonesia
  • Developing your understanding of the culture of the country where you do your internship.  There is no better way to do this than working alongside colleagues from that country.
  • Gaining work experience and seeing different ways of viewing and approaching your field of interest.  This looks fantastic on your CV.
  • Having a different and memorable holiday or break from your studies

What support will I get prior to leaving for my program?

When you sign up for a program, we will provide you with a heap of information about everything that you need to know, from visa issues to recommendations for what you should wear to work.  On top of this, at any time prior to starting your internship, you will be able to contact someone from International Internships by email or phone to ask any questions that come up.

What support will I get when I arrive in the country for my internship?

Unlike most organisations of a similar nature, which use agents, International Internships has a team of people based permanently in China, India and Indonesia (see “Our Team”).  They are the ones that have organised everything for you prior to your arrival and they will really look after you for the duration of your time there.  They will meet you at the airport, show you around the city, help you get settled in your accommodation, take you to work and help you to sort out any issues that arise at work, take you on various trips on the weekends, take you for drinks, take you to networking events and introduce you to people that they think you should meet, host some special functions for you and, most importantly, they will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the event that a problem arises.

The best part is that everyone that helps to run the International Internships programs is really nice and good fun!  There is a lot more to the International Internships programs than just finding an internship for you and we are confident that you will have a great time and feel secure the whole time you are there.

Will there be an opportunity to meet other people from the programs before I go?

We will put you in touch with anyone else doing an internship in your country as early as we can.  Where possible, we will also organise an opportunity for you to meet each other and a representative of International Internships over dinner, although this obviously depends somewhat on where people live.

Do I have to travel alone?

International Internships can’t book your flights for you. However, we can help you to find cheap flights and we encourage you to share flights with others from your program.

What vaccinations do I need before coming on a program?

You can get all the medical advice that you need, including the recommended vaccinations, from: www.traveldoctor.com.au.  Your GP is also able to advise you on this.

Can I apply if I am not an Australian citizen - either studying in Australia or living in another country with no connection to Australia?

Yes.  Our programs are all about diversity and we encourage you to participate regardless of your country of origin.  However, please note that the visa process will vary depending upon which country you are from.  We are happy to help with this, but make sure that you apply as early as possible because there are often a lot more steps involved in getting a visa for a non-citizen and paperwork will often have to be sent abroad to be processed, which takes time!

What industries can I work in?

International Internships is open to sourcing internship positions for you in literally any field.  We have lots of contacts in each country already, but if we don’t have any in the field that you are seeking then we will use all of our resources to try and make some.  When you apply you get the opportunity to specify exactly what you are seeking and if we are not able to find something that matches this description then we will refund your deposit, so nothing is lost.  Some of the fields that we have great contacts in include:

  • Journalism/Media
  • Teaching
  • AIDS Awareness
  • Social Work
  • Art/Design
  • Export/Import
  • Hospitality
  • Community Development
  • Marketing
  • Accounting/Finance
  • Law
  • Healthcare/Nursing
  • Architecture
  • Construction Management
  • Banking
  • Engineering
